Orlando, Fla. - Junior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) was impressive offensively for No. 17 ranked Saint Xavier University in a softball doubleheader sweep of Ursuline College (Ohio) Thursday morning as part of the Rebel Springs Games in Orlando, Fla. Murphy went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and four RBI in SXU's 9-1 victory over six innings in game one and then added a run scored and two RBI in the Cougars' 10-8 win in the second game. Freshman third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) also had a productive day for Saint Xavier combining for three hits, three runs scored and two RBI.
In Thursday's first game, the Cougars came out strong from the start scoring five unanswered runs over the first three innings. Freshman second baseman Ashley Tenerelli (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI, while freshman designated hitter Jamie Reed (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) went 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double. SXU went ahead, 6-0, before Ursuline answered with its lone run in the top of the sixth inning. However, three runs in the bottom of the sixth by the Cougars ended things an inning early. Freshman right-hander Jackie Dugan (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) earned her first collegiate victory (1-1) on the mound throwing all six innings and allowing just three hits, a run (unearned) and two walks with eight strikeouts.
SXU carried its offensive momentum into game two exploding for seven runs in the top of the first inning highlighted by three Ursuline errors and back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore pitcher Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and senior right fielder Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East). Ursuline would rally and make things interesting in the final four innings, but the Cougars added three more runs to their total in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the victory. Ruettiger went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI, while Mollohan was also 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a RBI. Brown got the win as well for the Cougars posting five strikeouts in seven innings of work, improving her record to 1-1 on the young season.
Saint Xavier University (3-4 overall) plays three more games on Friday, March 5, taking on NCAA Division II University of South Dakota (S.D.) at 11 a.m. (eastern) before matching up against NAIA foe Indiana Wesleyan University (Ind.) in a 1 p.m. (eastern) meeting.
