Orlando, Fla. - Junior leftfielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, but it was not enough as No. 17 ranked Saint Xavier University dropped its fourth straight game falling, 4-2, to Northwood University (Mich.) in collegiate softball action Wednesday at the Rebel Springs Games in Orlando, Fla. The Cougars (1-4 overall) were scheduled to play two games Tuesday, but had its first game against Mary University (N.D.) cancelled due to rain. In addition to Gryczewski, freshman third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and freshman designated hitter Jamie Reed (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) also each collected two hits in Tuesday's game. Senior centerfielder Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) hit a RBI single in the top of the fourth inning to give Saint Xavier its first run and then freshman second baseman Ashley Tenerelli (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) walked in the second run in the fifth inning. Senior righthander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) got the loss for SXU (1-1) throwing all six innings and allowing 11 hits, four runs (three earned) and a walk with one strikeout.
Saint Xavier University (1-4 overall) takes Wednesday off and continues play on Thursday, March 4, with a doubleheader against Ursuline College (Ohio). The twinbill is scheduled for a 9 a.m. (eastern) start.
