Daytona Beach, Fla. - Despite jumping out to an early 1-0 lead off a RBI single by senior shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich), the No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University baseball team had trouble manufacturing runs the rest of the game and fell, 4-1, to No. 7 Embry-Riddle University (Fla.) Tuesday evening at Sliwa Stadium in Daytona Beach, Fla. The loss shadowed a solid pitching performance by junior righthander Ken Hurta (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen), who threw all eight innings and allowed just four hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks with three strikeouts. It was SXU's second straight loss to the Eagles after starting the year with a 3-0 mark.
Senior left fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) got the offense rolling for the Cougars in the top of the first inning with a double to centerfield and later scored on O'Brien's single up the middle. Unfortunately, Saint Xavier ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts and left runners stranded at second and third base before adding any additional runs. A RBI triple followed by a RBI groundout in the bottom of the third inning allowed Embry-Riddle to take a 2-1 lead. The Eagles would add some insurance in the bottom of the eighth when a pair of Cougar errors allowed two more runs to cross home plate and sealed the 4-1 loss. Senior right fielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) led the offensive attack for SXU going 2-for-4 at the plate. Saint Xavier University (3-2 overall) continues its Florida trip on Wednesday with a 1 p.m. (eastern) game against Bellevue University (Ky.). The Cougars will then face Embry-Riddle University (Fla.) for the third time this week at 4 p.m. (eastern).
