CHICAGO - Led by game-highs of 24 points and 20 rebounds by sophomore forward Phil Riggs (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), the No. 3 seeded Saint Xavier University men's basketball team had little trouble pulling away for an 87-71 victory over No. 6 seed Holy Cross College (Ind.) in first-round action of the 2010 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. With the win, the Cougars improve to 21-9 overall this season and advance to face No. 2 seed Olivet Nazarene University in Thursday's semifinals game in Bourbonnais, Ill. In addition, senior guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds and moved up to No. 16 in SXU's all-time scoring list with 1,348 points and No. 14 in career rebounds with 616 boards.
The outcome was never in doubt as Saint Xavier jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and never trailed en route to the big, 16-point victory. Senior guard Marcus Jackson (Hammond, La./Wayne State/Delta College/Hammond) also had a solid outing for the Cougars finishing with 17 points off the bench on 6-for-11 shooting from the floor. SXU dominated the game inside scoring 50 of its 87 points in the paint and also took advantage of 18 turnovers by the Saints scoring 28 points off the miscues. The Cougars were also on fire in the first half shooting 50 percent (19-for-38) from the field and scoring 54 points to take a 54-35 lead into halftime. Sophomore guard Taylor Williams led Holy Cross College Tuesday recording 23 points and 16 rebounds.
Saint Xavier (21-9 overall/7-3 CCAC) advances to the CCAC semifinals and will take on No. 2 seed and No. 21 ranked Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Thursday, March 4, in Bourbonnais, Ill. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at McHie Arena.
