Sanford, Fla. - Paced by a combined five hits, two runs scored and three RBI by senior right fielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton), the No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University baseball team split two games Monday during its annual week-long Spring Break trip in Florida. The Cougars (3-1 overall) won a 10-inning thriller over Brescia University (Ky.), 12-10, Monday morning at Sanford Stadium in Sanford, Fla., and then headed to Daytona Beach, Fla., that evening to fall, 13-3, in seven innings to No. 7 ranked Embry-Riddle University (Fla.). Clements was huge in the day's first game against Brescia going 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, triple and three RBI. There was no shortage of runs scored in Monday's first game against Brescia with the Bearcats jumping out to an early 5-2 lead after the first three innings. However, the SXU offense exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth highlighted by a two-RBI triple by Clements and a two-RBI double by senior first baseman Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic). Trailing 10-7 after six innings of play, Brescia was able to tie things up, 10-10, with three unanswered runs over the seventh and eighth innings. In the top of the 10th inning, Tezak scored senior shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) from second on a RBI single and sophomore catcher Brett Ratajczak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) added an insurance run when he hit a RBI single to bring home senior second baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis). Junior Austin Lehmann (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) got the victory (1-0) in relief throwing 1.2 innings and allowing just three hits and no runs with two strikeouts.

Junior third baseman Matt Erickson (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for Saint Xavier in Monday's night game against Embry-Riddle. All of SXU's three runs came in the first inning led by a two-RBI single by Tezak, but the Eagles tied things up quickly in the bottom of the frame off a three-run homer. The rest of the game was all Embry-Riddle with the Eagles scoring at least a run in each of the next five innings to end things early. Junior rightie Joe Branigan (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) took the loss (0-1) for the Cougars throwing the first four innings and allowing nine hits, 11 runs (all earned) and five walks with five strikeouts. Saint Xavier University (3-1 overall) will take on No. 7 Embry-Riddle University (Fla.) again in a nine-inning affair Tuesday night. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. (eastern) start at Sliwa Stadium in Daytona Beach.
