Orlando, Fla. - Despite a solid outing at the plate by junior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest), the No. 17 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team dropped two games to a pair of tough NCAA Division II foes Monday during the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. The Cougars (1-3 overall) lost the first game of the day to Bellarmine University (Ky.) by a score of 4-1 and then fell to Mount Olive College (N.C.) in the second game, 6-3. Murphy went a combined 3-for-6 on the day with a double and two RBI. The injury bug has hit SXU early this week with three of its starters, including No. 1 pitcher Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher), unable to play in Monday's games.

In the first game against Bellarmine, Saint Xavier took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Murphy brought home junior left fielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) on a RBI single to right field. However, Bellarmine tied the game in the bottom of the frame off a RBI single and then pulled away for good in the bottom of the sixth with three more runs. Murphy was the only Cougar player in the game to record more than one hit going 2-for-4 with a RBI. Freshman righthander Jackie Dugan (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) took the loss (0-1) throwing all six innings and allowing six hits, four runs (all earned) and two walks with two strikeouts.

SXU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead again in Monday's second game against Mount Olive when Murphy hit a RBI double to left centerfield to score Gryczewski from third in the bottom of the first inning. However, four unanswered runs by Mount Olive over the next two innings left Saint Xavier playing from behind the rest of the way. A RBI single by junior catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) in the fifth inning cut into the lead, but the Cougars left the bases loaded before they could do any more damage. SXU got a sacrifice fly from freshman shortstop Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in the final frame, but it was not enough to prevent the 6-3 loss. Junior second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg), junior right fielder Rachel Krabbe (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) and freshman third baseman Jamie Reed (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) each finished with two hits in the second game. Sophomore Nicole Derezinski (St. John, Ind./Andrean) threw the first five innings for the Cougars and got the loss (0-1) giving up seven hits, five runs (one earned) and two walks with a strikeout.

Saint Xavier University (1-3 overall) returns to action at the Rebel Springs Games on Tuesday, March 2, with a 9 a.m. (eastern) game against Mary University (N.D.). The Cougars then take on Northwood University (Mich.) immediately following at 11 a.m. (eastern).
