Softball - Mon, Mar. 1, 2010
Orlando, Fla. - Thanks to the dominating pitching performance of senior pitcher Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher), the No. 17 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team started the 2010 season and its annual Florida trip with a 12-2 win against Clarke College (Iowa) on Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games held in Orlando, Fla. Shearer allowed only one hit against the first batter she faced, while giving up only two runs (none earned) in five innings. In game two of the split doubleheader, the Cougars (1-1 overall) dropped a nail-biter, 3-2, against Walsh University (Ohio).
Game one started with a pair of quick unearned runs to give Clarke College an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. It was the last time the Crusaders would score as the Cougars used a big eight-run, third inning to eventually close the game out, 12-2, in five innings. Freshman third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) started her college career off in a big way as she went 3-for-3 in her debut with two runs and two RBI. Junior centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) also went 3-for-3 and added three RBI of her own.
In game two, SXU jumped out a 2-0 lead with a two-run single by junior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) scoring junior second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) and junior leftfielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East). Walsh tallied a run in the fourth inning to cut the lead in half, 2-1. It would stay that score until the seventh inning as Walsh rallied with two in the final frame to give a heart-breaking 3-2 loss to the Cougars.
Saint Xavier University (1-1 overall) will continue play at the Rebel Springs Games in Orlando, Fla., today with a 9 a.m. (eastern) match-up against Bellarmine University (Ky.) followed by a 11 a.m (eastern) game against Mount Olive College (N.C.). These will be the third and fourth games of the Cougars annual week-long, 13-game Florida trip.
