Sanford, Fla. - Led by a monster day by senior first baseman Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), the Saint Xavier University baseball team started its 2010 campaign in impressive fashion easily sweeping Brescia University (Ky.) in a doubleheader Sunday held at Sanford Stadium in Sanford, Fla. SXU won the first game of the twinbill, 16-2, in five innings and carried the offensive surge into the nightcap with a 15-5 decision, also in five innings. The wins give the Cougars a perfect 2-0 record to start the new season. In the first game, SXU started slow only to score 16 runs in the game's final two frames and take care of Brescia University, 16-2. Preseason NAIA All-American selection Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher), a senior lefthander, picked up the victory for the Cougars with five innings pitched allowing only two runs on seven hits. Offensively, Saint Xavier was led by Tezak, who hit a home run and drove in five runners in the game. Junior centerfielder Anthony Mazuir (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) also helped going 3-for-3 at the plate, including two runs, a RBI and a stolen base.

In game two, the Cougars continued the momentum they had at the end of the first game to cruise to a 15-5 victory over Brescia. Senior pitcher Bryant Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) pitched four innings and picked up his first victory of the season (1-0). At the plate, Tezak went 2-for-4 and added two more RBI on the day. Sophomore catcher Brett Ratajczak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) added four RBI on a 2-for-3 game.

Saint Xavier University (2-0 overall) continues play today on its annual southern trip. In a split doubleheader, the Cougars will face Brescia University again at 11 a.m. (eastern) and come back at 6 p.m. (eastern) to play Embry-Riddle University (Fla.). Both games are scheduled as nine-inning games.
