CHICAGO - Despite five kills and seven digs by freshman outside hitter Aaron Porter (Willowbrook, Ill./Downers Grove South), Saint Xavier University dropped a Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) match to Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) in three sets (23-30, 18-30, 23-30) Saturday evening at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (3-13 overall/1-3 MAMVIC) had difficulty containing the potent offensive attack of the Fighting Bees, which tallied 61 kills and an attack percentage of .465 over the three-set match. In addition, freshman setter Jack Malone (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) tallied 19 set assists for SXU.
Freshman outside hitter Matt Yerkes (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist) and freshman middle blocker Joe Mooney (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) also each finished with five kills on the night for the Cougars. Freshman libero Justin Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) recorded five digs as well for SXU. Sophomore outside hitter Dan Dowjotas led Saint Ambrose with 13 kills and nine digs.
Saint Xavier (3-13 overall/1-3 MAMVIC) heads to Davenport, Iowa, next weekend to take part in the two-day Fighting Bees Classic hosted by Saint Ambrose University. The Cougars open the event with a MAMVIC match against Warner Southern University (Fla.) at 12 p.m. on Friday, March 5. It is the first of four matches SXU will play on the weekend.
