Detroit, Mich. - The Saint Xavier University cheerleading squad took home a first place title in the Collegiate Small Co-Ed 1 Cheer Division of the JAMLive! Competition on Saturday, February 20, held at the Cobo Center in Detroit, Mich. The 12-member team, led by head coach Renee Sullivan, created its own original routine for the event and spent the week prior to the competition perfecting it. The SXU cheerleaders defeated 12 other collegiate cheerleading teams from around the nation in order to claim its first victory at the JAMLive! Competition. Following the event, Sullivan was elated when describing what this accomplishment meant to her and her squad.
"I've been coaching for many years and each year has had its own unforgettable moments, but this year may be the best to date," said Sullivan. "This team of talented young people has been through a lot over the season; but through it all, they stuck together, kept their heads held high and showed me what it really means to be part of a team. I am really honored to be able to call myself a coach to each and every one of them. This season wasn't easy, to say the least, but by pulling together and working hard, we accomplished things beyond winning first place at a competition. I could not be more proud of a group of people as I am of this group."
The Cougar cheerleaders will take to the road again on March 14 competing in the Windy City Challenge at Mundelein High School in Mundelein, Ill. Champion Spirit Group based out of Naperville, Ill hosts the two-day event.
