CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University senior Amy Poull
(Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) ran an 18:30.05 in the 5K (5,000 meters) at the Chicagoland Championships hosted by Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., on Friday, February 12, and qualified for the 30th Annual NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships with the impressive time. In addition, freshman Mercedes Mancha
(Elgin, Ill./Streamwood) qualified for Nationals with a time of 18:19 in the 3,000-meter race walk. Poull and Mancha become the third and fourth SXU runners to accomplish a national qualifying time joining senior Lauren Dentzman
(Lemont, Ill./Lemont) in the mile run and sophomore Jacina Sims
(Park Forest, Ill./Rich East) in the 60-meter dash.
The Cougars distance-medley relay (DMR) team will also be competing at the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 4. The squad improved on its previous qualifying mark to finish with a time of 12:43.15. This time qualifies the DMR team in the ?A' standard for the Championships. Along with Sims and Dentzman, the team includes junior Kelly Malone
(Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley) and senior Amanda Janosz
(Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg). SXU women's track coach Lisa Ebel
loves the improvement that Poull showed in her latest performance.
"Amy ran an unbelievable race beating her previous personal best time by 25 seconds," said Ebel. "We only had one individual qualifier during the indoor season last year and this season we have four, so this squad has shown a great deal of improvement. Now we just have to get ready for a good showing at the national meet."
Starting on March 4, qualifying members of the Saint Xavier University women's indoor track team will compete at the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships held annually in Johnson City, Tenn. The Cougar qualifiers leave for the three-day event on Wednesday, March 3.
