Milwaukee, Wis. - Despite a combined 27 kills and 19 digs by freshman outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South), the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team dropped both of its matches Saturday at the Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) Tri-Match at Allen-Bradley Gymnasium in Milwaukee, Wis. The Cougars (3-12 overall) dropped their first match to host Cardinal Stritch in four sets (30-28, 18-30, 20-30, 17-30) and then fell to No. 8 ranked Lindenwood University (Mo.) in three sets (22-30, 11-30, 24-30). Although both opponents are members of the MAMVIC, neither match counted towards the conference standings.
In Saturday's first match against Cardinal Stritch, Porter finished with match-bests of 17 kills and 11 digs. Freshman outside hitter Matt Yerkes (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist) was tough as well for SXU with 11 kills and six digs, while freshman outside hitter Joe Zahalka (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) posted 10 kills and four digs. Freshman setter Jack Malone (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) set things up with a match-high 36 assists. The Cougars got off to a hot start winning the first set and connecting on 18 of their 24 attack attempts for kills, but had difficulty maintaining quality attacks in the later sets and dropped the next three games. Porter was the lone SXU player to tally double-digit kills in the day's second match with 10 in addition to his eight digs and three block assists, while Malone posted 18 assists and a pair of service aces. Freshman libero Justin Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) was solid defensively for the Cougars with eight digs.
Saint Xavier (3-12 overall/1-2 MAMVIC) return to action on Saturday, February 27, with a home match against Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) foe Saint Ambrose University (Iowa). The match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
