Women's Basketball - Sat, Feb. 20, 2010
South Bend, Ind. - Senior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) sank a pair of free throws with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to give No. 2 Saint Xavier University a 72-68 victory over Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the IUSB Student Activities Center in South Bend, Ind. With the win, the Cougars (26-1 overall/8-1 CCAC) clinch at least a share of the conference regular season title with one game to play and a 1.5 game lead over University of St. Francis (Ill.) at 6-2. McClain led SXU in scoring with 19 points, while senior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) chipped in 15 points and five rebounds. The Titans fall to 19-8 overall and 5-3 in the conference with the loss.

Also scoring in double figures for the Cougars were junior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) with 14 points and junior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) at 13 points. Young also led Saint Xavier on the boards with eight rebounds, while Barone was effective distributing the basketball Saturday with a team-best six assists. The Cougars started the game strong jumping out to an early 12-1 advantage in the first five minutes and shooting an impressive 61 percent (19-for-31) from the field in first-half action. The hot shooting helped as SXU took a 40-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the shots did not continue to fall as easily in the second half and, despite trailing the entire half, IUSB was able to trim the deficit and nearly took a lead late in the frame. However, big free throws by Barone and McClain in the closing seconds helped seal the key road victory for SXU.

Saint Xavier (26-1 overall/8-1 CCAC) wraps up its regular season slate on Tuesday, February 23, with a CCAC home game against Robert Morris University. The "Senior Day" game for SXU is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Prior to the game, a brief ceremony will be held to honor the team's six seniors.
