CHICAGO - Led by the efficient attacking of freshman middle blocker Joe Mooney (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) with eight kills in only 12 attempts, the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team defeated host Moody Bible Institute in three games (30-18, 30-19, 30-24) for their first Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) victory of the season Wednesday night in Chicago. The offensive attack for the Cougars was generated by freshman setter Jack Malone (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) with 35 assists and zero errors. Along with Mooney, freshmen outside hitters Aaron Porter (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) and Matt Yerkes (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist) each tallied nine kills as well to lead SXU.
Freshman libero Justin Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) led the Cougars defensively finishing with 14 digs and freshman outside hitter Joe Zahalka (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) recorded a solo block, two block assists and nine kills. With the win, Saint Xavier improves to 3-10 overall this season and 1-2 in the MAMVIC standings.
The Cougars (3-10 overall/1-2 MAMVIC) are scheduled to compete in the Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) Tri-Meet this Saturday. Their first opponent for the Tri-Meet will be Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) at 11 a.m., and then at 1 p.m., they will match up against Lindenwood University (Mo.).
