Women's Basketball - Wed, Feb. 17, 2010
CHICAGO - Behind a double-double performance of 28 points and 10 rebounds by Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic), the No. 2 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team picked up a big non-conference victory over No. 23 Lambuth University (Tenn.), 76-59, Wednesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Hannemann was nearly unstoppable for SXU hitting 10 of her 12 shot attempts from the floor and also recording four blocks and four steals toward the winning effort. With the win, the Cougars improve to 25-1 overall this season, while the Eagles drop to 17-9 on the year.
Senior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) finished with 14 points, three rebounds and three steals for Saint Xavier, while junior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) also scored in double figures for the Cougars with 11 points to go along with seven rebounds. SXU came out strong out of the gate quickly jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the game's first four minutes. However, Lambuth stormed back and closed the gap to two points, 9-7, with just under 14 minutes to play in the first half. The Cougars built a double-digit advantage, 24-14, with seven minutes to play before halftime, but the Eagles fought back again and went into the break trailing by just three points, 32-29, despite committing 15 first-half turnovers.
SXU started the second half tough and built its lead back up to double figures early in the second half, but LU continued to rally and trimmed the deficit to four, 55-51, with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. However, that was as close as things would get the rest of the way as the Cougars used a 16-2 scoring run over the game's next seven minutes to pull away for good and claim the big NAIA victory. SXU shot an impressive 54 percent (14-for-26) from the field in second-half action and never trailed in the ballgame. Senior guard La Tonya McKinney led Lambuth with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
