Women's Basketball - Mon, Feb. 8, 2010
Joliet, Ill. - Saint Xavier University junior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) was named the CCAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending February 7 after her impressive performance in No. 3 ranked SXU's 83-78 victory over conference rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) this past Saturday. Barone finished with 15 points and four assists in the big win, which avenged a 77-72 setback to the Fighting Saints back on January 12 for the Cougars' lone loss of the season (23-1 overall). In addition, the victory also tied Saint Xavier with St. Francis for first place in the conference standings with 6-1 marks.

Barone was instrumental in Saturday's win hitting a pair of free throws with 52 seconds remaining in the game that gave SXU the lead for good. She hit four of her five shots from the field, including three of her four three-point attempts. Currently, Barone is second in the CCAC in assists per game (4.4) and third in steals per game (2.7). It is the first time she has earned the weekly honor this season, but the sixth time that a Cougar player has received the recognition with senior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) earning it four times and senior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Oak Forest) claiming it back on December 21, 2009.

Saint Xavier (23-1 overall/6-1 CCAC) continues its conference slate tonight against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
