Hannibal, Mo. - The Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team lost a pair of matches held in Hannibal, Mo., this last Friday night to host school Hannibal-LaGrange College (Mo.) and Missouri Valley University. In the first match, the Cougars fought a four-set match, but ultimately fell to Hannibal-LaGrange (27-30, 22-30, 30-28, 28-30). Leading SXU was the all-around play of freshman outside hitter Aaron Porter (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South), who recorded 21 kills, 20 digs and four service aces. Freshman setter Jack Malone (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) had a great effort with 35 assists to spur the Cougar attack, while freshman libero Justin Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) helped with 16 digs of his own.
In the second match of the evening, Saint Xavier fell in three sets to Missouri Valley University (23-30, 17-30, 20-30). Porter continued to lead the way with eight kills and six assists and freshman middle blocker Joe Mooney (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) tallied three solo blocks and one assisted block to defensively guide the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (2-9 overall/0-1 MAMVIC) will play next on Wednesday, February 10, travelling to a conference match against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The match will begin at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
