Cincinnati, Ohio - Behind a combined 50 kills and 13 service aces by freshman outside hitter Aaron Porter (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South), the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team earned the program's first two victories over the weekend at the Charlie Wrublewski Inaugural Men's Volleyball Tournament hosted by College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) in Cincinnati, Ohio. For his efforts, Porter was one of just six total players named to the all-tournament team at the four-team event this weekend. SXU won both of its matches Friday in three sets defeating host College of Mount St. Joseph (30-12, 30-12, 30-19) and College of Mount St. Vincent (N.Y.) (30-19, 30-23, 30-19). Unfortunately, the Cougars could not carry the momentum into Saturday's matches falling to Siena Heights University (Mich.) in four sets (30-23, 26-30, 24-30, 16-30) and Milwaukee School of Engineering in three (17-30, 23-30, 17-30).
Freshman setter Jack Malone (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) also had a nice weekend performance for Saint Xavier finishing with 105 set assists, while freshman middle blocker Joe Mooney (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) and freshman right side Nick Piccirillo (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) played well in the middle of the net. Defensively, freshman libero Justin Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) was tough on both digs and serve receptions as well.
"It was nice to get the first win, because these guys have worked extremely hard and it was nice to see their efforts rewarded," said SXU men's volleyball coach Bob Heersema. "Aaron had a very nice weekend for us and was deserving of his all-tournament recognition. Our team is getting more and more comfortable playing as a group and the benefits of that were displayed this weekend."
Saint Xavier (2-6 overall/0-1 MAMVIC) will take on Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) on Tuesday, February 2, for a non-conference match-up at Brother Rice High School in Chicago. The match will start at 7 p.m.
