CHICAGO - The start of 2010 also represents the opening of the Saint Xavier University men's track season with the Phoenix Invitational on January 16 at the University of Chicago. Highlights for the Cougars from the Invitational included: senior Chris Spencer
(Frankfort, Ill./Eastern Illinois/Lincoln-Way East) winning the 400-meter dash in 51.11 and a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash in 23.76, sophomore Matt Rychel
(Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) posting a second-place finish in the 3000-meter run in 9:05.74, sophomore Brandon Hummer
's (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run in 2:02.68 and sixth-place finish in the mile in 4:34, and junior Roy Witty
's (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) third-place finish in the 5000-meter run in 16:47.
"Decent start," said SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister
. "It's always tough getting the 'rust' off after a long Christmas break, but I thought that we did well for an opening meet."
The Cougar men's track team also took part in the Eastern Illinois MegaMeet on January 23 in Charleston, Ill. Saint Xavier was led by Rychel's third-place finish in the mile run in 4:31 and Spencer's seventh-place finish in the 600-meter run in 1:24.7. Hummer and senior Emmanuel Gonzalez
(Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) turned in a fine 3-4 finish in the 1000-meter run in 2:37.2 and 2:39.1, respectively.
"We really love the MegaMeet," remarked McAllister. "It gives us a chance to gauge oursleves early in the season against some top Division I competition. Spencer, Hummer, Rychel and Gonzalez are about primed to make our relay bid this next week, so I feel that we are comfortable in our own skin, so to speak."
The Cougars travel to Bloomington, Ill, this weekend to the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University to compete in the Titan Open . The meet begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.
