Davenport, Iowa - Despite a combined 27 kills and 15 digs by freshman outside hitter Aaron Porter (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South), the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team could not pick up its first win of the season over the weekend dropping a pair of matches at the St. Ambrose University Tri-Match Saturday at Lee Lohman Arena in Davenport, Iowa. The Cougars (0-4 overall) fell to Graceland University (Iowa) in three sets by scores of 24-30, 18-30, 27-30 and then dropped its first Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) match of the year to host St. Ambrose in three sets as well, 19-30, 24-30, 28-30.
In Saturday's first match, Porter led the SXU attack with 12 kills to go along with eight digs. Freshman libero Justin Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) was solid defensively for the Cougars finishing with a team-best nine digs, while freshman setter Jack Malone (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) set things up with 23 assists. The team did a good job in the first set of limiting its attack errors, but struggled in the later portions of the match to generate kills. Porter was tough again for SXU in the second match against St. Ambrose posting 15 kills and seven digs. Malone recorded 29 assists in the match, while Garcia and freshman outside hitter Matt Yerkes (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist) each chipped in nine digs. The Cougars started off slow offensively, but warmed up nicely giving the Fighting Bees all they could handle in the final set, which ended 28-30.
Saint Xavier (0-4 overall/0-1 MAMVIC) will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, this weekend to take part in the College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) Tournament. The Cougars will play four matches over the two-day event opening with a 2:30 p.m. (eastern) match Friday against host College of Mount St. Joseph.
