CHICAGO - Key free throws by senior guard Larry Pikes (Richton Park, Ill./Alaska-Anchorage/Blackhawk-East/Rich South) and sophomore forward Zach Opheim (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) in the final minute of play helped lift Saint Xavier University to a 71-69 win over Indiana University-South Bend (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Freshman point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) led the Cougars in scoring for the second straight game finishing with 18 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists. With the victory, SXU improves to 16-7 on the year and 4-1 in the conference standings, while IUSB drops to 6-16 overall and 2-2 in the CCAC.
Sophomore forward Phil Riggs (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) also had a big game for the Cougars Saturday posting a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Opheim provided a huge lift off the bench with 11 points and four boards, while sophomore forward Dominique Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) also played well with 10 points, six rebounds and six assists. SXU never trailed in the ballgame and led by as many as 15 points in the second half. However, a late 18-4 scoring surge by IUSB that began midway through the second half tied the game, 64-64, with five minutes to play. The Cougars pushed their lead back up to five, 69-64, on a free throw by Pikes, but the Titans responded with five straight free throws to tie the game, 69-69, with 1:18 remaining. Opheim and Pikes would each split their two free-throw attempts in the final minute to give SXU a two-point lead and IUSB missed both of its two three-point attempts to end the game. Saint Xavier (16-7 overall/4-1 CCAC) returns to action on Saturday, January 30, with a CCAC road match-up against Robert Morris University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at the Gentile Center in Chicago.
