CHICAGO - Freshman outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) finished with team-bests of 16 kills, nine digs and two service aces, but it was not enough as the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team fell to Hannibal-LaGrange College (Mo.) in three sets (19-30, 26-30, 24-30) Thursday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars had difficulty finishing their attacks commiting 23 errors over the three-set match. With the loss, SXU falls to 0-2 overall in its inaugural season, while the Trojans open their 2010 campaign with a victory at 1-0.
Freshman setter Jack Malone (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) posted 27 set assists and five digs for the Cougars in Thursday's match. Freshman outside hitter Joe Zahalka (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) also had a solid outing for SXU posting seven kills and seven digs on the night. Freshman outside hitter Matheus Roham led Hannibal-LaGrange with a match-best 22 kills, while redshirt freshman setter Sean Carls finished with 34 set assists and 12 digs for the Trojans.
Saint Xavier (0-2 overall) heads to Davenport, Iowa, this Saturday, to participate in the Saint Ambrose University Tri-Match. The Cougars will take on Graceland University (Iowa) at 2 p.m. and then open its Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) schedule with a 4 p.m. match against host Saint Ambrose University.
