Joliet, Ill. - Led by 22 points and three steals by sophomore forward Phil Riggs (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team picked up a big Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory Wednesday night defeating rival University of St. Francis (Ill.), 86-75, at the USF Recreation Center in Joliet, Ill. Despite shooting 54 percent (26-for-48) from the field and out-rebounding the Cougars (36-29) in the game, the Fighting Saints had trouble taking care of the basketball committing 24 turnovers thanks in part to 10 steals by SXU. The Cougars (15-6 overall/3-0 CCAC) also shot well from beyond the three-point arc Wednesday hitting eight of their 17 attempts for a 47-percent clip.
Senior guard Larry Pikes (Richton Park, Ill./Alaska-Anchorage/Blackhawk-East/Rich South) was one of three other SXU players to score in double figures in the road win posting 14 points to go along with five assists. Junior guard Marco Samimy (Peterson Woods, Ill./CISC-Northtown Academy) chipped in 13 points, while freshman forward Scott Taloff (Bedford Park, Ill./St. Laurence) came off the bench to contribute 10 points. As a team, Saint Xavier shot 50 percent (36-for-72) from the field in the game and distributed the ball well to the tune of 19 assists. The Cougars never trailed Wednesday jumping out to a 8-0 lead in the game's first three minutes and taking a 45-33 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Saint Xavier (15-6 overall/3-0 CCAC) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., on Saturday, January 16, to take on No. 20 ranked Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The conference game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
