Joliet, Ill. - Despite a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds by junior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech), the No. 2 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team could not overcome a 19-point halftime deficit and suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday night, 77-72, to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars (17-1 overall/2-1 CCAC) outscored the Fighting Saints, 50-36, in second-half action, but shot just 27 percent (9-for-33) from the field in the first frame and trailed, 41-22, at the break.
Senior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) finished with 11 points and team-best 14 rebounds, while sophomore guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) filled in well for injured senior starting guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic). After the slow start, SXU seemed to gain some momentum after halftime and used a three-minute stretch early in the second half to score 16 unanswered points cutting the deficit to five, 53-48, on a three-point play by Hannemann with 11:39 left to play. However, USF would not back down and pushed its lead back up to double figures, 64-54, with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The Cougars would surge again late and cut the deficit to three, 71-68, on a three-pointer by senior guard Angie Bush (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township). Unfortunately for SXU, this would be as close as it would get the rest of the way as the Fighting Saints hit key shots and free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory.
Saint Xavier (17-1 overall/2-1 CCAC) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., on Saturday, January 16, to take on CCAC foe Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The game is slated for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
