CHICAGO - Junior forward Jake Listebarger (Harvard, Ill./McHenry County/ Richmond-Burton) hit nine of his 11 shots and led all scorers with 21 points to help give No. 10 Saint Xavier University a 78-60 victory over Concordia University (Mich.) in NAIA men's basketball action Wednesday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The game was tight in the first half with the Cougars (14-5 overall) clinging to a three-point advantage, 35-32, at the break. However, SXU heated up in the second half shooting 54 percent (14-for-26) from the floor and scoring 43 points to pull away for the 18-point win.
In addition to Listebarger, junior guard Stan Mayfield (Snellville, Ga./McKendree University/Shiloh) had a big day for the Cougars scoring 18 points and dishing out five assists. Listebarger was also solid on the boards for SXU finishing with a game-best six rebounds. The Cougars made few mistakes in Wednesday's win committing just nine turnovers in the game. Also scoring in double figures for SXU was senior guard Larry Pikes (Richton Park, Ill./Alaska-Anchorage/Blackhawk East/Rich South) with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting.
Saint Xavier (14-5 overall/2-0 CCAC) heads to Florida this weekend for a game on Monday, January 4, against Ave Maria University (Fla.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. (eastern) tip-off.
