CHICAGO - Behind 18 points and 12 rebounds by senior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic), the No. 2 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team scored 33 points off turnovers in a big 77-50 victory over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in the championship game of the 2009 SXU Holiday Tournament Tuesday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Following the game, Hannemann was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP), while senior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) and senior forward Maureen Downs (Chicago, Ill./Loyola University/Marist) were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
In addition to Hannemann's big night, junior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) posted 18 points, four assists and four steals. Downs scored a career-high 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the floor, while freshman point guard Romisha Taylor (Chicago, Ill./Von Stueben) also had a productive night in a reserve role with five points and five assists. SXU was dominant on the boards in the championship game collecting 52 rebounds compared to just 37 by the Fighting Bees. The Cougars were tough defensively as well helping to force 25 turnovers by St. Ambrose and holding them to just 26 percent (17-for-66) shooting from the field. SXU led 37-27 at the halftime break and never trailed in the game after opening with a 10-0 scoring run in the first four minutes of play.
Saint Xavier (15-0 overall/1-0 CCAC) jumps back into its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate after the New Year with a road game against Holy Cross College (Ind.) on Tuesday, January 5. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. (eastern) start in South Bend, Ind.
