CHICAGO - Led by a second straight double-double performance by senior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic), the No. 2 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team used another big second half to pull away and claim a 78-62 win over University of Saint Francis (Ind.) on the second day of the three-day SXU Holiday Tournament Monday evening at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars bring their perfect 14-0 record into Tuesday's tournament championship game, which begins at 7 p.m. Hannemann finished Monday's game with team-bests of 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead SXU.
Senior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) also had another big tournament game for the Cougars Monday posting 20 points and seven rebounds. Senior center Marquita Smith (Chicago, Ill./Central Methodist/Lewis & Clark CC/Crane) was solid as well for Saint Xavier scoring 12 points and pulling down nine rebounds on the night, while junior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and five steals. Sophomore guard Kayla Mullins had a nice game off the bench for Saint Francis (Ind.) scoring a game-high 23 points, including four three-pointers. SXU led the entire game, including a 36-28 lead at the half, and built a 24-point advantage with just under five minutes to play in regulation.
Saint Xavier (14-0 overall/1-0 CCAC) takes on Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) on Tuesday, December 29, for the 2009 SXU Holiday Tournament Championship. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center.
