Women's Basketball - Sun, Dec. 27, 2009
CHICAGO - Opening the second half on a 21-7 scoring run, the No. 2 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team erased an eight-point, halftime deficit and scored 52 points after the break to pick up an 87-74 victory over Aquinas College (Mich.) on the first day of the three-day SXU Holiday Tournament Sunday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (13-0 overall) had four players score in double figures in Sunday's big win led by junior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech), who finished with a game-high 22 points on 10-for-16 shooting from the floor.

Senior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) also had a big night for SXU finishing with 19 points and game-best 12 rebounds. Senior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) posted 19 points as well for the Cougars, while junior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) chipped in 18 points and seven assists. SXU did an excellent job of taking care of the basketball in Sunday's victory committing just six turnovers in the game. The Cougars got off to a slow start offensively shooting just 34 percent (12-for-35) from the field in first-half action. However, the team warmed up after halftime and hit 60 percent (21-for-35) of its shot attempts in the second frame.

Saint Xavier (13-0 overall/1-0 CCAC) takes on University of Saint Francis (Ind.) on Tuesday, December 28, for the second day of the three-day tournament. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip-off at the Shannon Center.
