Men's Basketball - Tue, Dec. 22, 2009
CHICAGO - Junior guard Stan Mayfield (Snellville, Ga./McKendree University/Shiloh) scored five of his team-best 20 points in the game's final minute to help lead No. 10 Saint Xavier University to a 90-86 victory over Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) Tuesday afternoon in the second day of the 2009 SXU Midwest Men's Basketball Tournament at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (13-4 overall) shot well from the field Tuesday hitting 54 percent (30-for-56) of their shots from the field, including a 40 percent (10-for-25) clip from three-point range. In addition, freshman point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) provided a big lift off the bench for SXU scoring 19 points on 6-for-10 shooting.

The Cougars also had two other players score in double figures Tuesday with freshman forward Scott Taloff (Bedford Park, Ill./St. Laurence) posting 13 points and junior forward Jake Listebarger (Harvard, Ill./McHenry County/Richmond-Burton) chipping in 11 points. Saint Ambrose came out on fire offensively shooting nearly 60 percent (16-for-27) from the field in the first half, but SXU was able to keep pace and led by five, 47-42, at the break. The Fighting Bees cooled off a bit early in the second half and the Cougars were able to build a 13-point advantage. However, SAU came storming back late and closed to within a basket, 80-78, with 1:46 to play in regulation. Led by Mayfield, SXU hit its free throws down the stretch and kept the Bees at bay in the game's closing seconds. Saint Xavier (13-4 overall/2-0 CCAC) matches up with Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) in Wednesday's fifth-place contest. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at the Shannon Center.
