LaPorte, Ind. - Behind a game-high 20 points by senior guard Larry Pikes (Richton Park, Ill./Alaska-Anchorage/Blackhawk-East/Rich South), the No. 10 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team defeated Purdue University-North Central (Ind.), 74-63, Saturday evening at LaPorte Civic Auditorium in LaPorte, Ind. The Cougars (11-3 overall) also got a huge lift off the bench from senior guard Ken Black (Blue Island, Ill./Chicago Christian), who finished with 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field, including four three-pointers.
SXU jumped out to a 37-26 advantage at the halftime break and shot 42 percent (5-for-12) from beyond the arc in first-half action. The Cougars took care of the ball as well Saturday committing just nine turnovers compared to 16 miscues by the Panthers. Freshman point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) had a solid all-around game for SXU finishing with eight points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Saint Xavier (12-3 overall/2-0 CCAC) opens its eight-team Midwest Tournament today at 2 p.m. with a game against Harris-Stowe State University (Mo.). The three-day event will feature four games each day.
