Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - Senior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) scored a game-high 15 points and surpassed 1,000 points for her career at Saint Xavier University in an 87-44 victory over Mayville State University (N.D.) Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Cruzin Classic on the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The No. 2 ranked Cougars improved their perfect record to 12-0 overall after jumping out to a quick 10-0 lead in the game's first four minutes. SXU was tough defensively as well posting 18 steals and helping to force 34 turnovers by Mayville State.
In addition to McClain, three other Cougars scored in double figures in Sunday's big win. Senior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) shot an impressive 6-for-7 from the field and finished with 14 points and team-best eight rebounds. Junior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) also had a nice outing with 12 points and four blocked shots, while sophomore guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) posted 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field. SXU shot 48 percent (33-for-69) from the field in Sunday's game and led, 45-18, at the halftime break.
Saint Xavier (12-0 overall/1-0 CCAC) takes a week off before hosting its annual Holiday Tournament beginning on Sunday, December 27, at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars take on Aquinas College (Mich.) at 7 p.m. next Sunday on the first day of the eight-team tourney.
