Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - A lay-up by junior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) with two seconds remaining in regulation gave No. 2 ranked Saint Xavier University a 69-67 victory over John Brown University (Ark.) Friday afternoon at the Cruzin Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Cougars (11-0 overall) had not played a game since December 5 and, although the break did not change their winning ways, it did not help their shooting percentage (40 percent) or turnovers total (20) Thursday. Senior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) led SXU with 18 points and seven steals.
Things looked bright early for the Cougars as the team jumped out to a 17-6 lead in the game's opening six minutes behind a nine-point outburst by McClain. However, John Brown went on a 16-6 scoring run over the next six minutes and closed to within a point, 23-22, with eight minutes to play in the first half. The game stayed tight the remainder of the half and McClain hit a three-pointer with 1:27 left before halftime to send SXU into the break with a 40-36 advantage. Early in the second half, the Cougars pushed their lead up to nine points, 49-40, on a jumper by junior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech), but John Brown would not go down quietly and stormed back to pull within a point again, 54-53, with nine minutes to play. Although SXU never trailed in the second half, JBU was able to tie the game four times in the final three minutes, including a game-tying three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining. However, Barone's lay-up and steal on the ensuing throw-in sealed the 11th straight win for the Cougars.
Senior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) finished Thursday's game with 17 points and four rebounds, while sophomore guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) provided a huge lift off the bench with 13 points and two steals. Shalonda Young also had a solid all-around game for the Cougars recording eight points, seven rebounds and six steals. Defensively, SXU posted 24 steals, which helped to force 35 turnovers by John Brown University.
Saint Xavier (11-0 overall/1-0 CCAC) wraps up play in the Cruzin Classic on Sunday, December 20, with a game against Mayville State University (N.D.). The game tips off at 11 a.m. central time.
