Men's Basketball - Sat, Dec. 12, 2009
Palos Heights, Ill. - Senior guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) posted team-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds to help lift No. 14 ranked Saint Xavier University to a 92-84 road victory over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in NAIA non-conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars (11-2 overall) shot a blistering 77 percent (20-for-26) from the field in the second half to hang on and claim the eight-point win. Junior guard Stan Mayfield (Grayson, Ga./McKendree University/Shiloh) provided SXU with a huge lift off the bench scoring 18 points and recording a team-best three steals toward the winning effort.
Saint Xavier overcame a very slow start offensively as the Trolls jumped out to an early 13-2 lead over the game's first five minutes. However, a three-pointer by freshman forward Scott Taloff (Bedford Park, Ill./St. Laurence) helped spark a 15-6 run over the next four minutes to pull the Cougars to within a basket, 19-17, with just under 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Trinity Christian extended its lead back up to nine, 32-23, before SXU made another big run and tied the game for the first time, 34-34, on a steal and lay-up by Mayfield. With 2:40 to play in the first half, Scott converted a lay-up that gave the Cougars their first lead, 36-34, which they built into a 42-35 advantage at the break.
A lay-up by junior forward Jake Listebarger (Harvard, Ill./McHenry County College/Richmond-Burton) gave Saint Xavier its largest lead of the day, 52-39, with 15:27 remaining in regulation. The Trolls were not finished, however, and tied the game again, 69-69, with six minutes to play. At the two-minute mark, TCC took a one-point lead, 82-81, before the Cougars closed out the game on an 11-2 run behind six points by senior guard Larry Pikes (Richton Park, Ill./Alaska-Anchorage/Blackhawk East/Rich South). SXU had its reserves play a huge role in Saturday's win with the bench scoring 36 of the team's 92 points.
Saint Xavier (11-2 overall/2-0 CCAC) continues its road trip by heading to Goshen, Ind., to take on Goshen College (Ind.) on Tuesday, December 15. The match-up is scheduled for a 7 p.m. (eastern) tip-off.
