CHICAGO - Behind a game-high tying 21 points by junior guard Marco Samimy (Peterson Woods, Ill./CICS-Northtown Academy), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team rode a strong first half performance to an 80-65 victory over Holy Cross College (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Wednesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (8-1 overall/2-0 CCAC) hit 53 percent of their shots from the field (17-for-32) in first-half action and jumped out to an 11-point lead at the half, 37-26. Senior guard Larry Pikes (Richton Park, Ill./Alaska-Anchorage/Blackhawk-East/Rich South) hit all eight of his free-throw attempts in the game and finished with 14 points.

Samimy was 8-for-14 from the field, including a 3-for-6 clip from beyond the three-point arc, on the night. Sophomore forward Phil Riggs (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) also played well for SXU posting 13 points and six rebounds. As a team, the Cougars moved the ball well recording 19 assists in the contest and played solid defensively collecting 12 steals and helping to force 21 turnovers by the Saints. Sophomore guard Justin Breveard led Holy Cross College with 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Saint Xavier (8-1 overall/2-0 CCAC) hosts the four-team SXU Classic this weekend and takes on Indiana Wesleyan University (Ind.) on Friday, December 4, at 8 p.m. The Cougars wrap up the tourney with a 3 p.m. game Saturday against East-West University (Ill.).
