Jackson, Tenn. - Senior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) had a monster game with 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead No. 7 Saint Xavier University to a big 74-71 road win over No. 9 Lambuth University (Tenn.) Saturday in the final NAIA women's basketball game of the Lambuth University Classic in Jackson, Tenn. The Cougars (8-0 overall) kept their perfect record intact by scoring an impressive 52 points in second-half action after trailing 32-22 at the break. SXU was tough defensively helping to force 25 Lambuth turnovers in the game behind 15 steals.
Junior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) also had a big game for Saint Xavier posting 13 points and game-best four steals, while sophomore guard Michelle Tourtillott (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) came off the bench to chip in 12 points and three rebounds. Senior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) was tough as well with 13 points and three steals. The Cougars shot just 24 percent (8-for-34) from the field in the first half and Lambuth capitalized by taking a 10-point lead into halftime. However, it took just six minutes into the second half for SXU to close within a point, 45-44, on a steal and lay-up by McClain. The game stayed tight the rest of the way and was tied, 69-69, heading into the final minute of play. A jumper by McClain with 40 seconds remaining gave the Cougars the lead and two big free throws by Barone sealed the victory in the closing seconds.
Saint Xavier (8-0 overall) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., next weekend to take part in the two-day Holiday Inn Express CCAC Challenge hosted by Olivet Nazarene University. SXU kicks off the tourney with a tough match-up against No. 20 ranked Bethel College (Tenn.) on Friday, December 4, at 6 p.m.
