CHICAGO - Junior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) finished with game-highs of 13 points and five steals to help lead No. 7 Saint Xavier University to a 78-40 victory over visiting Judson University (Ill.) in NAIA women's basketball action Tuesday evening at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (6-0 overall) jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the game's first six minutes and never trailed the rest of the way en route to the big 38-point win. In addition, senior forward Maureen Downs (Chicago, Ill./Loyola University/Marist) had a nice game off the bench for SXU posting 10 points and three rebounds.
The Cougar defense was aggressive throughout the game helping to cause 30 Eagle turnovers in the game, including 20 off steals. Saint Xavier also dominated in the paint with 40 of the team's 78 points coming in the lane. Also playing well Tuesday for SXU were sophomore guard Michelle Tourtillott (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) with nine points and four rebounds as well as senior guard Angie Bush (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) posting eight points and four boards. Senior forward Alicia Rovertoni led Judson University with 13 points.
Saint Xavier (6-0 overall) heads to Jackson, Tenn., to compete in the Lambuth University Thanksgiving Tournament this weekend. The Cougars kick off the event with a 5 p.m. game Friday against No. 1 Union University (Tenn.) and then wrap up play on Saturday with a 3 p.m. match-up against No. 9 Lambuth University (Tenn.).
