Men's Basketball - Tue, Nov. 24, 2009
CHICAGO - Behind 18 points by sophomore guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team stunned No. 7 ranked Georgetown College (Ky.), 82-70, and stayed perfect Tuesday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (6-0 overall) shot an impressive 63 percent (15-for-24) in the second half to pull away late in the game after leading by three points, 37-34, at halftime. SXU also used solid long-range shooting to keep the Tigers at bay hitting nine of its 20 three-point attempts Tuesday for a 45-percent clip.

Saint Xavier came out on fire and jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the game's first six minutes behind big three-pointers by Gilgenbach and sophomore forward Dominique Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor). Georgetown would rally and tie the game, 18-18, with nine minutes to play in the first half. However, another three-pointer by Harvey on SXU's ensuing possession sparked a 17-6 run over the next five minutes of play. A late flurry of baskets by the Tigers in the closing minutes of the first half, including a jumper by senior guard Jamel Ferguson at the buzzer, cut into the SXU lead and made the score, 37-34, at the half.

Early in the second half, Georgetown would tie the game again, 39-39, before the Cougars went on a 10-2 run to take a 49-41 lead with 14 minutes to play in regulation. Georgetown would rally one final time and close to within a point, 49-48, with just over 12 minutes left before Saint Xavier would take control of the game for good extending its lead back into double figures in the closing minutes en route to the 12-point victory. Harvey had a solid game for the Cougars finishing with 17 points and seven rebounds, while freshman point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) contributed 12 points off the bench. Senior guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) finished with game-bests of eight assists and nine rebounds for SXU. Sophomore forward Vic Moses led all scorers with 26 points for the Tigers.

Saint Xavier (6-0 overall) continues its home stand on Friday, November 27, with a game against Loyola University-New Orleans (La.) at the Shannon Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
