CHICAGO - Sophomore forward Mary Kusner (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) finished with 11 points and seven rebounds to help lead the No. 7 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team to a 111-34 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) newcomer Holy Cross College (Ind.) Wednesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. It was a complete team victory for the Cougars with all 14 players on the roster posting at least three points and a rebound toward the winning effort. SXU was led in scoring by junior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech), who finished with a double-double performance of 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Other notable performers for Saint Xavier Wednesday night were senior forward Elizabeth Carney (Traverse City, Mich./St. Francis) and sophomore guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe). Carney recorded 10 points and two rebounds, while Young tallied nine points and five assists. As a team, the Cougars shot an impressive 51 percent (42-for-82) from the field and pulled down 73 rebounds. SXU also got great production from its reserves with 61 of its 111 points coming off the bench. Saint Xavier (2-0 overall/1-0 CCAC) heads to LaCrosse, Wis., this weekend to take part in the Viterbo University Women's Basketball Tournament. The Cougars open the event with a 7 p.m. game against Huntington University (Ind.).
