CHICAGO - Despite second-half goals by junior midfielder Ben Johnson (Woodridge, Ill./Western Illinois University/Naperville North) and sophomore midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle), the No. 2 seeded Saint Xavier University men's soccer team could not overcome an early 2-0 deficit and ultimately ended its season with a 3-2 loss to No. 4 seed Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in semifinals action of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament Wednesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. ONU scored its first two goals of the game in the opening 14 minutes of regulation and took a 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the sixth minute of play, junior forward Billy Jackson scored for the Tigers on a header in the box off a throw-in by freshman forward Logan Engelkes. Just under seven minutes later, Olivet struck again on a header by senior midfielder Vincent Mkhwanazi off a free kick by Engelkes. Twenty minutes into the second half, the Cougars cut the lead in half with a goal by Johnson on a penalty kick attempt. However, ONU answered right back with another score just three minutes later when Engelkes found the back of the net off a deflected ball in the box. Down 3-1 with less than three minutes to play in regulation, Guzman gave his team a chance with a late goal off a header in the box in the 87th minute. Senior keeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) finished with four saves for SXU in Tuesday's game, while junior Kenny Huber recorded five saves in goal for the Tigers.
Saint Xavier ends its season with a 13-5-1 overall record and finished in second place in the CCAC final standings with a 7-2-1 mark. The Cougars claimed the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament and received a first-round bye before falling in today's semifinals match-up.
