Men's Basketball - Tue, Nov. 10, 2009
Whiting, Ind. - Led by a career-high 18-point outburst by sophomore forward Phil Riggs (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team pulled away in the second half to claim an 81-65 victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in non-conference action Tuesday night in Whiting, Ind. The Cougars outscored the Crimson Wave, 40-26, in the second half to pick up the road win after leading by just two points, 41-39, at the break. Riggs shot an impressive 7-for-13 from the field to hit his scoring mark and also finished with a new career-high in rebounds with seven on the night.
Senior guard Larry Pikes (Richton Park, Ill./Alaska-Anchorage/Blackhawk-East/Rich South) also played well for SXU Tuesday recording 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. Senior guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) and sophomore guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) also scored in double figures for the Cougars Tuesday with 12 and 10 points, respectively. The SXU defense did a good job of limiting CCSJ to just 25 percent (6-for-24) shooting from the field in the second half and also helped to force 24 turnovers in the game.
Saint Xavier (3-0 overall/1-0 CCAC) takes part in the Trinity Christian College Mitchell Classic in Palos Heights, Ill., this weekend. The Cougars open with a 6 p.m. match-up Friday against Cedarville University (Ohio) and then close out the tourney with a 1 p.m. game Saturday versus Kuyper College (Mich.).
