Lockport, Ill. - Despite an overall 10th place finish and individual qualification to the NAIA National Championships by sophomore Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team wrapped up its season with a fourth-place finish in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Cross Country Championships Saturday at Dellwood Park in Lockport, Ill. Rychel will represent SXU at the NAIA National Cross Country Championships on Saturday, November 21, in Vancouver, Wash. He finished the hilly 8K (8,000 meters) course in 27:43 taking the top spot for the Cougars.
Next for the Cougars wa junior Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) in 20th place in the 98-man field with a time of 28:28. He was followed by junior Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) in 29th place at 28:56, senior Manny Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) in 32nd place at 29:05 and rounding out the SXU scoring was sophomore Dan Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) in 36th place with a time of 29:30. Saint Xavier men's cross country coach Ed McAllister was excited about Rychel's prospects.
"Matt has earned this berth at the national meet," said McAllister. "He has been our most consistent runner throughout the year. The course at the conference meet does not adequately portray the athlete's true time. Matt should run well and we are looking for a very solid finish next week." The conference meet was won by Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) and the Tigers will represent the CCAC as a team at the NAIA National Championships. The men's race begins at 1:15 CST on Saturday, November 21, in Vancouver.
