Kansas City, Mo. - Saint Xavier University senior linebacker Mike Lally (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) was named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Defensive Player of the Week when the national office released the honor late Monday. Lally had an impressive outing in SXU's regular-season finale victory, 36-24, over No. 8 ranked University of Saint Francis (Ind.) Saturday afternoon in Fort Wayne, Ind. With the win, the Cougars completed their first perfect season (11-0), won the MSFA Mideast League title for the first time in the program's history and ended USF's 56-game home win streak dating back to November 2001.
Lally posted a game-best 15 tackles (four solos), including a pair of tackles-for-losses totaling five yards. The Cougar defense held the nation's ninth-best scoring offense (41.4 ppg) coming into the contest to just its third game under 30 points this year, including a scoreless fourth quarter to preserve the victory. Lally's 23.0 tackles-for-loss rank second in the NAIA this year.
Saint Xavier (11-0 overall/7-0 MSFA) has a bye for the final week of the 2009 NAIA Football regular season and awaits its seed and pairing for the 2009 NAIA Championship Series. The seeds and pairings will be officially announced by the NAIA on Sunday, November 15, at 1:30 p.m. on www.CollegeFanz.com.
