Women's Cross Country - Sat, Nov. 7, 2009
CHICAGO - For the second straight year, the No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University women's cross country team won the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Championships Saturday morning at Dellwood Park Course in Lockport, Ill. In addition, the Cougars earned their third consecutive automatic team bid to compete in the 2009 NAIA Cross Country National Championships, which take place at 11:45 a.m. (pacific time) on Saturday, November 21, at Fort Vancouver Historical Site in Vancouver, Wash. SXU had six of its runners finish among the top 15 individually, which earned the team six all-conference honorees, and head coach Lisa Ebel was also named the CCAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the third straight season.
"This is definitely the strongest race we have had as a team this year," said Saint Xavier University women's cross country/track coach Lisa Ebel. "Our top seven runners finished within a minute and 15 seconds of one another. This performance makes me very optimistic about our chances of improving upon last year's showing at Nationals. With a solid group of seniors competing, this is by far the most experienced team I have ever brought to the national meet."
Senior Amy Poull (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) led the way for Saint Xavier finishing second overall on the very challenging 5K (5,000 meters) course with a time of 19:32. Claiming the sixth through eighth spots overall were senior Amanda Janosz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg), senior Lauren Dentzman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and sophomore Kelly Malone (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley). Janosz boasted a time of 20:06, while Dentzman and Malone posted 20:10 and 20:13, respectively. Also scoring for the team was junior Dana Eppley (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) in 13th place overall with a time of 20:33. Junior Jade Braden (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) also claimed all-conference recognition for the Cougars with a 15th place and a time of 20:38. Rounding out the top seven for SXU was sophomore Jackie Ott (Island Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) in 19th place with a 20:47 clocking. Poull will be making her fourth consecutive appearance at the national meet.
Saint Xavier continues its 2009 season at the NAIA Cross Country National Championships in Vancouver, Wash., on Saturday, November 21. The championship meet will be held at the Fort Vancouver Historical Site with the women's race scheduled for 11:45 a.m. (pacific).
