CHICAGO - Despite a combined 28 kills and 34 digs by freshman outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team ended its 2009 season Saturday at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament at McHie Arena in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Cougars went 1-2 on the weekend in three, pool-play matches against Judson University (Ill.), Trinity Christian College (Ill.) and No. 13 ranked Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), respectively. SXU won its opening match against Judson in three sets, but dropped its final two matches of the event to end the season.

In Friday's first match against JU, sophomore middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) led the way with a match-best 13 kills as Saint Xavier took the match in three sets 25-23, 25-20 and 25-12. Knudsen also played well for the Cougars posting 10 kills and 17 digs, while sophomore setter Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) finished with 25 assists. SXU could not carry the momentum into the second tourney match Friday afternoon falling to Trinity Christian in three sets 25-17, 25-19 and 25-20. Knudsen led the attack with eight kills, while August finished with 18 assists and sophomore libero Erin Sebo (Downers Grove, Ill./St. Scholastica/Downers Grove North) tallied 11 digs.

In the third and final match Saturday against No. 13 Olivet Nazarene, Knudsen and freshman outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) each recorded 10 kills, but it was not enough as the Tigers won in three sets 25-29, 25-13 and 25-12. Knudsen and Mullaney were also both tough defensively as well Saturday posting 10 and 13 digs, respectively. Sophomore setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) finished with 20 assists in the final match.

Saint Xavier finished 19-22 overall and fourth in the CCAC final regular-season standings with a 6-4 mark. The Cougars also claimed the No. 4 seed in the eight-team CCAC Volleyball Tournament this past weekend and went 1-2 in their three pool-play matches.
