Portage, Ind. - Sophomore midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) finished with two goals and an assist to help lead the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team to an impressive 6-0 victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) and regular-season finale for both teams Tuesday evening at Portage High School in Portage, Ind. Senior keeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) notched his conference-leading 10th shutout of the season behind five saves. The win gives SXU the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming CCAC Men's Soccer Tournament, which begins on Saturday, November 7.
Palar scored the game's first goal in the seventh minute of regulation off an assist by sophomore forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State University/ Waubonsie Valley). In the 22nd minute, sophomore midfielder Cody Culver (Roscoe, Ill./Harlem) scored for the Cougars off a pass by senior forward Zach Kekelik (Merrillville, Ind./Crown Point). Palar put SXU ahead, 3-0, off another assist from Kekelik in the 23rd minute of play. The second half was more of the same for Saint Xavier as senior forward George Mihai (Chicago, Ill./Garden City CC) scored off an assist from Palar nearly eight minutes after halftime. In the 78th minute, sophomore defender Dan Cross (Gravesend, England/Axton Chase) got in on the scoring action with a goal off a corner kick by senior midfielder Andriy Diatkovych (Lviv, Ukraine/Lake View). Junior forward Ernad Dzananovic (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) capped the scoring with a goal off a third assist by Kekelik in the 80th minute.
Saint Xavier (13-4-1 overall/7-2-1 CCAC) enjoys a first-round bye with the No. 2 seed in the 2009 CCAC Men's Soccer Tournament. The Cougars will host a semi-final game in the tourney on Wednesday, November 11, at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The opponent and start time for the game have yet to be determined.
