South Bend, Ind. - Behind game-highs of 31 points, eight rebounds and seven assists by senior guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team got its 2009-10 season off to a great start with a 94-74 win over Holy Cross College (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Tuesday night at McKenna Arena in South Bend, Ind. Scott shot an impressive 11-for-20 from the field, including two three-pointers, and made seven of his eight free-throw attempts to set a new career-high scoring mark for the four-year starter. The Cougars shot 55 percent (17-for-31) from the field in second-half action to pull away after leading by six points, 46-40, at the half.
Leading by as many as eight in the first half, Saint Xavier started to pull away midway through the second frame using a 16-4 scoring run to build a 75-59 advantage with 7:48 to play in regulation. In addition to Scott, sophomore forward Zach Opheim (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and sophomore guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) each came off the bench to chip in 12 and 10 points, respectively. Opheim also set a new career-high in scoring with his 12-point performance Tuesday.
Saint Xavier (1-0 overall/1-0 CCAC) returns to action on Friday, November 6, with a non-conference road game against Ashford University (Iowa) at Kehl Arena in Clinton, Iowa. Start time for Friday's game is 7 p.m.
