Findlay, Ohio - Saint Xavier University senior linebacker Mike Lally (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) was named the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League Defensive Player of the Week when the league released the honors Monday. Lally led a tough defensive front that was instrumental in a big 34-17 road win over No. 18 ranked Walsh University (Ohio) in MSFA Mideast League action last Thursday at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio. The victory last week sets up a huge conference match-up this Saturday in Fort Wayne, Ind., when the No. 6 ranked Cougars take on No. 8 University of Saint Francis (Ind.) to decide which team will win the MSFA Mideast League title.
Lally recorded 13 total tackles, including 10 solo stops, to lead the defensive effort Thursday. Of his 13 tackles, five were tackles for losses totaling 19 yards and one was an eight-yard sack. Lally also forced a fumble in the big win. This is the third time this season that Lally was won the weekly defensive award and the fifth overall for the entire SXU defense.
Saint Xavier (10-0 overall/6-0 MSFA) wraps up its 2009 regular season with a huge finale against No. 8 University of Saint Francis (Ind.). The outcome of Saturday's match-up will likely decide the MSFA Mideast League champion as well as impact the seedings for the NAIA Championship Series, which will be officially announced by the NAIA national office on Sunday, November 15.
