Upland, Ind. - Sophomore middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) finished with a combined 21 kills, six solo blocks and five service aces to help lead the Saint Xavier University volleyball team at the Taylor University Trojan Challenge over the weekend in Upland, Ind. The Cougars (17-20 overall) posted a victory over University of Saint Francis (Ind.), but lost its other two matches at the tourney against Ohio Dominican University (Ohio) and Spring Arbor University (Mich.), respectively.
In Friday's first match against Ohio Dominican, SXU fell in three sets 25-14, 25-15 and 25-14 despite six kills apiece by both senior right side Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and freshman outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community). Sophomore libero Erin Sebo (Downers Grove, Ill./St. Scholastica/Downers Grove North) played well defensively finishing with 10 digs. In Friday's second match against University of Saint Francis (Ind.), the Cougars got back on track winning in three sets 25-22, 25-22 and 25-19 with Scudder posting a team-best 12 kills. Galas also played well with seven kills and three service aces toward the winning effort.
Saturday's only match against Spring Arbor University (Mich.) did not go as well with Saint Xavier falling in four sets 12-25, 25-23, 14-25 and 17-25. Galas recorded six kills and eight digs, while Scudder tallied five kills and two solo blocks. Sophomore setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) had 22 set assists for the Cougars in Saturday's match.
Saint Xavier (17-20 overall/5-4 CCAC) wraps up its regular season at home on Tuesday, November 3, with a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) match against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). A victory Tuesday would give SXU the No. 4 seed heading into this weekend's CCAC Volleyball Tournament.
