Bensenville, Ill. - Despite three shots-on-goal by junior forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont), the No. 6 seeded Saint Xavier University women's soccer team ended its season Saturday afternoon in the first round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament with a 5-0 loss to No. 3 seed Robert Morris University (Ill.) in Bensenville, Ill. The Eagles got two first-half goals off penalty kicks and continued the aggressive offensive attack in the second half to claim the big victory. The Cougars end their season with a 9-9-1 overall mark.
Senior defender Anne Meshes scored both of the penalty-kick goals for RMU in first-half action, the first coming in the 17th minute and the second in the 41st minute of play. Just over 10 minutes into the second half, sophomore midfielder Patricia Nogueira used an assist from junior forward Gifty Appiah to put the Eagles ahead, 3-0. Appiah took advantage of a well-placed free kick by Meshes to score the game's fourth goal in the 62nd minute. Meshes and Appiah struck again in the 74th minute when Meshes sent a long shot to the back of the net from the right side off a Appiah pass. Senior keeper Nikki Grant (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) recorded five saves for the Cougars Saturday.
Saint Xavier (9-9-1 overall/5-4-1 CCAC) finished sixth in the CCAC final standings with a 5-4-1 mark and ends its season with a 9-9-1 overall record. It was the first time since 2004 that SXU has not finished a season with at least a share of either the CCAC regular-season title or the tournament championship.
