CHICAGO - Behind goals by sophomore midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) and senior forward Zach Kekelik (Merrillville, Ind./Crown Point), the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team held on for a 2-1 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Robert Morris University (Ill.) Saturday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (12-4-1 overall/6-2-1 CCAC) led 2-0 until the 81st minute when a late goal by the Eagles made things interesting over the game's final nine minutes. Senior keeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) finished with four saves for SXU.
Palar scored the first goal of the game on a breakaway in the 22nd minute of play. Leading 1-0 at the half, Kekelik added some insurance to the victory with another breakaway goal in the 55th minute. RMU junior midfielder Arturo Rosiles then cut the lead in half when he scored on an unassisted shot off a deflection in the box right in front of the goal. The Cougars have now won six of their last seven games.
Saint Xavier (12-4-1 overall/6-2-1 CCAC) wraps up its regular season slate on Tuesday, November 3, with a conference game against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. (central) start at Portage High School in Portage, Ind.
